VM restored successfully but does not show up in Hyper-V Manager

Last Updated: May 03, 2016 01:55PM CEST

PROBLEM

Restoring a VM completes successfully with no on screen errors, but the VM does not show up in Hyper-V Manager.

The Microsoft Windows Hyper V VMMS Admin event log shows the following error:

Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS-Admin
Source: Microsoft-Windows-Hyper-V-VMMS
Event ID: 16302
Level: Error
Description:
Cannot load a virtual machine configuration: The data version is not supported (Virtual machine ID 2EA5AD5F-3D8D-4D3A-9DF8-1DDF286EDF37)

CAUSE

OS of the Hyper-V node where the backup was taken is older OS than the OS you are restoring to.
i.e. restoring a VM which was backed up from a Server 2012 node onto a Server 2008R2 node will not be successful.

SOLUTION

  1. Restart the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service
  2. Ensure that you are restoring to a Hyper-V node running the same or more recent OS as the Hyper-V node that the VM was backed up from
