Installing this tool at a remote site will allow you to send a redundant copy of your backups to that site over a WAN/VPN/Internet connection. This tool can also be installed on a VM running in the cloud, meaning you can host your offsite copy data on a cloud platform, however it would need to be a cloud VM running a version of Microsoft Windows* on the other end that runs the Altaro Offsite Server tool, and not just cloud storage.
The Altaro Offsite Server tool maintains a heartbeat between the client and the server in order to ensure all data has been transferred over successfully, and retries failed blocks. It is also the process that takes care of the Deduplication technology so that only the changed uncommon blocks are sent over the WAN, keeping transfer size down and offsite backup times quicker using WAN acceleration, so it is absolutely required that this tool is running on the other end of the WAN/VPN/Internet connection.
There are many cloud providers that allows you to spin up a Windows VM in the cloud, and all will allow you to install the Altaro Offsite Server tool on that VM as your offsite backup target. Some examples that our customers have successfully used are:
- Microsoft Azure
- Google Cloud Platform (Google Compute Engine)
- Amazon EC2
A full guide on how to setup the Altaro Offsite Server can be found here: http://support.altaro.com/customer/portal/articles/1975500
Some services will also allow you to send them the “Seed” disk so as to avoid having to transfer the entire VM’s over the line for the first time, which might normally take a while depending on your Internet connection.
